A strengths-based group program for grandparents raising their grandchildren: Development and education

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to introduce a strengths-based group program for the grandparents raising their grandchildren and to evaluate the results of the program utilizing mixed methods. In the quantitative evaluation, a single group pre-post test was applied to examine the difference of self-control and communication ability of the participants after and before participating in the program. In the qualitative evaluation, using the data from group progress notes and in-depth interviews, this study explored the meanings of group experiences of the participants. The group education program consisted of eight, 90 -120 minute sessions. A variety of methods including lecture, discussion, role-play, and video tape was used. The main topics of the group program are: searching and understanding the strengths of self, their grandchildren and community, being a good communicator, and understanding community resources. After participating in the program, the score of self-control of the grandparents significantly improved. Also, the grandparents benefited from "sthe study" having experienced changes in attitudes toward their life and relationships, feeling consoled by having ¡¯we¡¯ feelings, and had fun and benefits from ¡¯the study¡¯ in late life. This study provided important implications for group practice with the elderly population.
